John Milton (1608–1674)
During 17 th century, John Milton was one of the greatest English poets, historians, and intellectuals who is best known for his epic poem Paradise
Lost to justify the work of God to man. It tells the biblical story of the
fall from grace of Adam and Eve in language which is a supreme achievement of
rhythm and sound. He was considered the most significant English writer after
William Shakespeare. His epic Paradise Lost, classical tragedy Samson Agonistes,
and pastoral elegy Lycidas are widely regarded as the greatest poems of their
kind in English.
He made
an important contribution to the idea of free speech and free press in a
pamphlet, Areopagitica (1644), which he wrote and published in response to a
restrictive printing ordinance established by Parliament in 1643. By 1652, Milton had
become totally blind. His blindness forced him to dictate his verse and prose. Milton died on 8 November 1674.
