William Shakespeare (1564–1616) was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. He is widely regarded as the greatest playwright in the English language. Known as the "Bard of Avon," Shakespeare wrote 39 plays, 154 sonnets, and two long narrative poems. His works are celebrated for their rich language, complex characters, and timeless themes. Some of his most famous plays include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, and King Lear. He wrote across various genres, including tragedy, comedy, and history. His plays have been translated into every major language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare's influence extends beyond literature and theatre into everyday language. He introduced many words and phrases still in use today. William Shakespeare died in 1616, but his legacy continues to inspire people around the world.
